Why do businesses need a brand? What do we mean by branding? Branding is different things to different people but in a nutshell, it is how a business uses words, images or colours to identify its products and services. A brand has to make a connection with the audience it is trying to attract and encompasses everything about a business – whether good or bad! Some well-known brands include Coca-Cola, McDonalds, Marks and Spencer – all of which use an identifiable logo, colour scheme and key words. What makes branding so important? Branding is one of the most valuable aspects of a business and can represent a big chunk of a business’s worth. A recognised brand can encourage repeat business (if the brand is favourable) so ensuring you have coherent branding across all mediums in turn encourages loyalty. Loyalty is a big aspect of business especially in times of recession, ensuring a business has repeat customers can be crucial to survival and if a business has a strong brand, it can command a premium price. What key points should be considered when branding? With branding being such a key aspect of a business, its use and integration should be considered carefully and having a brand strategy should not be overlooked. Brands build relationships so you need to ensure:  The brand name has been carefully thought out – we took 2 months to decide on 
 Original Associates!  The brand is not a copy of an existing brand  The brand is consistent across all mediums i.e. keep variations to a minimum  The brand is clear and relevant to the business i.e. don’t use a heart symbol
 for a floristry - ensure there is a clear message  The brand is open to extensions i.e. for additional products or services as
 the business grows
